Nice resort directly on the beach. Would definitely return.
Stayed 5 days - never left the hotel. Super relaxing. Got to swim everyday. Didn't feel like China!
Except ...Tried to leave the breakfast with a coffee and was chased down by the staff lady - they don't want people leaving with anything!
Paradise resort hotel, best i have ever stayed in, wonderful room, stunning grounds- pools, private beach, great food etc, total luxury. Only negatives was poor english by staff and price of drinks ridiculously high. Also, april was just too humid for me- sweat city in april, but the hotel cant be faulted for this, great spot to honeymoon, will be back if ever win the lotto!!
I had stayed at Howard Johnson for 5 days as a chaperon of school trip. The hotel was beautiful, clean and well maintained. The best part of this hotel were staff members, they were extraordinary kind and helpful. I am used to be one of very demanding and high maintenance guest even 5 stars there were little attitude for annoying guest;) but there I never got any attitude but a willful helping hand. The highlight was I lost my iphone at last moment of my departure. I track my phone at the hotel however I ran out of time, had to leave to Shanghai without my phone. I speak no Mandarin, tried to call or e-mail but couldn't reach to hotel, it was very struggling myself, then my home phone rang from those one of nice hotel receptionist, Nancy, fortunately she spoke almost perfect English, she had helped me for 3 hours to figure out how to send my phone back to Shanghai. Use hotel phone, my home phone, my spouse contact, back and forth, that was such complicated situation especially I could not explain my address in Mandarin, she could dump away this to our trip guide who could not reach at the moment. She made couple clever ideas, helped me right away. I really appreciate for this help also how she was willing to stepped in my trouble. Thank you so much!!
Brilliant Hotel highly recommend
This hotel is perfect! We stayed here for four nights during the Chinese May day holiday so we were expecting it to be busy.... we were wrong. The staffs level of English was ok and check in was smooth,we were upgraded to a superior sea view room on arrival which turned out nice because after a bit of exploring we found that we had a much better view of the sea. The room was nice enough, we didn't really want to spend much time in the room anyway. We had breakfast for two every morning which was ok the only problem was dining with so many Chinese people who can get a little crazy when there is a buffet up for grabs. The other food options were reasonable but nothing special if you want western food then its a 25 minute taxi ride to Yuya road which is close to another beach . The best part about the hotel is the grounds and three swimming pools surrounded by palm trees. You can order beers or cocktails at the pool bar and have them delivered to your sunbeds. Also there is a private tunnel to the beach which takes about 10 minutes to walk to, once your there you can grab a beer or a frozen coconut at the hotels beach bar. This hotel is perfect for relaxing for a few days in the sun and we would defiantly go back again.
Nice rooms, good breakfast
Stayed 2 nights at HoJo Sanya with family. Nice rooms with limited seaview. Location was slightly remote from city centre yet accessible by taxis. Basic gym-room facilities with good breakfast provision. Lots of tour groups from Russia and China yet the breakfast was re-stocked quickly within seconds. Staff were generally attentive. Downside was that there was only one shuttle-bus departure to downtown each day. Bathrooms seems a bit tired, saw some old shampoo bottles at the back end of the tub.
We had a tremendously wonderful time in Sanya at the HoJo Resort. The rooms were great with a great view, very clean! The food was fantastic (esp. the breakfast buffet and Korean Rest.), except the Lobby Bar's drinks were watery and I'd dare not order a "snack" from there... it won't be what you think it might be. The staff was wonderful. When I told them it was our Birthdays they gave us free drink vouchers and put a bday cake in our room! With this stated individuals need to know that just because it states its the Howard Johnson, doesn't make it 100% western. 80% of the tourist here are Chinese, it's in China of course, and the rest are mostly Russian tourist. Expecting English and anything western anywhere in China (other than Hong Kong) is a fantasy. With that said the staff was very pleasant and happy if you could speak a little bit of Chinese and definitely tried their best to speak English when prompted. We will stay here again! No doubt this is the best place to stay in Sanya for the price and location offered!
Have just spent 10 wonderful nights at this hotel, a beautiful location with everything you could want for a relaxing holiday. The staff were most welcoming and helpful although I only speak
English this did not present any problems. Various restaurants which served good food and reasonable hotel prices. The room was cleaned every day to a high standard. We were hit by the
typhoon which passed through he Philippines which unfortunately damaged some of the gardens
and deposited rubbish in the pools, however the staff very quickly cleared up everything very efficiently and all praise to them. Highly recommend this hotel, and for people from England and Europe just do not know what they are missing as this is five star and in a country where we are
welcomed and treated very well.
A very nice place to stay in Sanya. It is my 2nd time to stay in this hotel. I took my parents, relatives and kids back for the beautiful view and delicious foods there I want to share with them. Different families flied from different place and gathered in Sanya for a luxury weekend. Once we left the taxi, the door boy gave me a card with the the taxi number we just took from the airport in case we would left something. One of my relative 's birthday was the day he checked in, we enjoyed a very delicious and free birthday cake the staff provided. Sorry for we forgot in such a big family meeting. And how lucky they arranged it for him. Their considerate attracked me back.
One of the best hotel in Sanya
We had one of the best experiences in Sanya at Howard Johnson. This is the best hotel to stay in Sanya. Staff are very friendly, fluent english speakers and great amenities. The most family friendly environment and very well trained staff ever! Overall it was beyond expectation service! Thumbs up!👍
A great stay at a wonderful hotel
This was our first visit to Sanya so we were a little uncertain regarding choice of hotel from such a large number to select from.
First impressions were good, we checked in late at night after our air flight. The check in was attended to speedily by efficient English speaking staff.
We were shown to our room which was on the top floor on the ocean side. The room was spacious, well equipped and very clean. The bathroom was very modern and was also very clean.
We woke in the morning to a spectacular view over the hotel gardens, pools and the ocean. The view was truly magnificent.
The breakfast was buffet with a very large selection of both Chinese and Western food. The food was well prepared and the staff were very helpful and friendly.
It was a palace!
I really enjoyed the stay, amazing room, swimming pools and beaches. We stayed in a two bedroom suite and there was more than enough space for 4 persons. We had a balcony with stunning beach view!
Room was spacious, clean except the tissue papers smelled mouldy. I guess not many people book the two bedroom suite so these papers have been there for ages.
The hotel was so big that we spent 10 minutes walking to breakfast every morning. I didn't mind walking in the morning, but it gets frustrating if you spent the whole day walking outside and it takes so long to walk back to your room. So double check your bag before leaving your room because trust me, you don't want to double back.
Beach was a few minutes away from the hotel. You have to walk through a short tunnel to reach it. It was not as dirty as comments on the Internet suggested. Two fruit sellers were doing business on the beach but they were not annoying.
I love the lobby! There was no air conditioning in the lobby - because you will never need it. It was so breezy, you can just sit at the lobby leisurely for an hour. And the ceiling was tall...not quite like any other hotel lobbies that I have seen.
If there was one thing that I was not happy with, it was the limited food options there. We arrived at the hotel in the afternoon, starving, only to find out the hotel restaurants were close between lunch and dinner. So we ended up visiting an outdoor seafood restaurant. It was unreasonably pricy and the food was nasty. Do check out food options before you go!
But the Chinese restaurant in the hotel was very nice. Good food and service. We went there twice during our stay.
If you want to eat something local, check out the food stalls opposite the hotel in the evening. They sell wonderful food like fried veggies, barbecued fish and seafood at cheap prices!
Not many taxis available at the hotel. I found out from a taxi driver that the hotel actually stops taxis from coming into the hotel premise just so the guests would use the hotel cars. If you want to get a taxi, you can walk outside the hotel, there are taxis available. But if you are leaving for the airport and do not want to walk with luggage, you can ask concierge to call you a car. It was RMB 35 to the airport. I think that was reasonable considering the car was so much cleaner and newer than normal taxis.
I know this is unrelated to the hotel, but DO NOT go to the airport too early. There was no air conditionings or fans and they would only let you in about 1 hour before the flight. We ended up waiting and sweating...terrible.
Very nice place to stay
Clean and cozy rooms, friendly staff, nice and neat poolside and private beach, a lot lot of trees and flowers around, great variety of meals for breakfast. Minus: very few people speak English or Russian.
The hotel is really good, nice staff (but very poor english, or no english at all, and sometimes forget to put fresh towel or water or other things in the room), location and area around is perfect, beach is so cool. Breakfast is yammy;) so I higly recommend to stay here)))
Great Value for Awesome Relaxing Time...
Spent the Chinese May Holiday at the HoJoSy and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves... went with good friends for a totally relaxing time and got that in spades!!! Nice attractive lobby and reception, wonderful rooms (we had an amazing 'ocean view') and three incredible pool complexes!!! We chose the middle pool but also spent some time at the other two areas which were equally wonderful. Nice towels and good service, although we did enjoy bringing our own refreshments with us to poolside. Access to the beach was easy, a seven minute walk from the pool area... beach is long and lovely, water in May was clean and warm...
Breakfast buffet was adequate, but was a buffet... often things were not as hot as we would like, but great variety and catered to Chinese / Western appetites...
HoJoSy is an short taxi ride from the airport, but watch out for the taxi scam... they love to overcharge considerably for what should be no mare than a 10 - 15 RMB 10 minute ride...
New year trip
If you only look for a nice hotel with nice pools, this hotel is not bad at all. But if you are looking for your dream beach vacation, the beach is really not impressed. I will suggest other beach resort instead.
Our trip was six nights. We stayed first at a resort in Dadonghai for three nights before moving to Howard Johnson.
Howard Johnson is a great resort with loads of amenities. Spa rooms are nice. Fish spa is a must try at CNY 30 for half an hour. Hotspring whirlpool also a must try. The heated indoor pool is very good except some may feel the water is too hot at 37c.
Private tunnel direct to public beach so no need to cross street. Beach sand quality not as good as Dadonghai Bay but here there are motor tricycles that can take you along the beach area. Jetski is a must try as it is quite affordable here is Sanya at CNY 180 for 10 minutes ride. We booked with our online travel agent which also included a free Jetski and 45 minutes spa
Breakfast restaurant is too crowded and food is average quality. It is better to take room service than having breakfast in the restaurant unless your package includes breakfast.
Location is not central so need to take 15 CNY taxi to restaurants which are about 7 km away from hotel but still worth the ride as food are much cheaper and at good restaurants.
Free shuttle to/free airport which is about 15 minutes away. There is free shuttle to downtown but there is nothing to see anyway in downtown.
Overall excellent experience at Howard Johnson Sanya.
The hotel is really big and new with a lot of restaurant and different activities as fitness, karaoke, tennis... the room are clean and you can not hear your neighbour next in the room, they have everything inside hair dryer, little fridge, weight scale, kettle... bed is comfortable.
A lot of choice for breakfasts from European food to Chinese food.
If you go go to city center you can order taxi and pay around 15€ or take the bus near to the sea and it will take approximately 30-40 minutes depending of traffic.
My only disappointment of this hotel is nobody speak English, at the reception most of them don’t speak expect a few word, usually they call the manager who is near by.
They have also 2 restaurant inside of this hotel with menu translate in English, some bars and a other restaurant with buffet.
Because this hotel is located closer to the airport than the place where the fancy Ritz and MGM grand is (YaLong Wan), it is a bit cheaper, even though the inside is just as fancy as any of those hotels. It also has a fancy outdoor lobby, a nice pool, and beach access.
If you are adventurous, the local bus takes you everywhere you want to go (Number 1 market, and YaLong Wan, and DaDong Hai, etc), and it stops right in front of the hotel. A very quick and convenient way to travel around SanYa.
Otherwise, you can lounge around all day and hit the beach whenever you want to.
Also, I was a fan of the breakfast. Huge variety with both Asian and Western styles. yum. They also leave a small plate of fruit in your room every night.
Note: Currently construction is going on near one of the sides of the hotel. Try to get a room away from that side.
Excellent Stay at the HJ
Stayed here with a group for a week on Hainan. Generally a very good hotel, quite nice decor and a giant area covered. It took quite a bit of navigation to find your way around. Lots of local Chinese guests and quite a few Russians which was quite interesting for this part of China. Did not have to deal much with staff so cannot comment on their competence but seemed to be quite proficient at their jobs. It was nice to see a large amount of lifeguards and pool attendants around the pool watching the kids in the pool to make sure that they were not getting into difficulties. Rooms were comfortable and well maintained. Good shower pressure, and nice balcony that overlooked the complex. A little background noise, but this is normal in China. Location was great in downtown Sanya.
Stayed for 4 weeks between November & December 2018 Great hotel with very
friendly and helpful staff, rooms were kept very clean with big fluffy towels changed
every day. Pools in good and clean condition surrounded by palm trees and loads of
poolside sun loungers. Different types of Restaurants in hotel catering for all.
Great buffet BBQ, live entertainment and plenty of things for kids. Gentle walk through
grounds to beach which stretches for a couple miles, clean sand and clear sea
a paradise. Highly recommend another side of China..
Went there with my family of 4 people. We booked a 2 bedroom suit, and it was great! Very comfortable, bright and spacious. Seafood buffet dinner at main restaurant was very nice, we ate there 3 evenings out of 4. Concierge was very polite and helpful. Only bad thing I have to mention about happened the first day we arrived. We were very hungry after travelling, and went to the main restaurant for lunch. We had to wait for around 15 minutes and only then a waiter told us that there is no gas so they can't cook food, but it didn't really affect our vacation, and it went very well! :-)
This hotel was the most beautiful in it's location. It was newly built and the room were spotless clean. The pool was very beautiful and it had many sections to it. We also went to the spa and it was like being in paradise. I recommend the spa because you can have a private room with your partner in a coconut bath fill with rose petals while drinking a fresh coconut juice. Also check was like first class service. As you walk up to check in, you are handed a fresh towel to clean your face and a nice ice tea. The beach was amazing and very big and a nice stroll from the hotel to the beach. Very green and tidy! The restaurants were delicious with the mouth watering south east asian food. The service was very helpful and smiled and attend to your ever needs. In the downtown area of Sanya, this is the place to stay without question. Also they have a free shuttle bus that picks you up from the airport.
A wonderful hotel in Hoi Nan
This is a very new hotel in Sanya of Hoinan Island. The facilities are very complete and basical you are not necessary to find other entertainments away from the hotel. The swimming pools are very confortable for all ages from years-3 to years-80 and the food provided are very nice.
Take Your Hat Off to Five Star Service
From the moment you arrive guests are made most welcome and every effort is made to make the stay enjoyable. We found the Staff provided 6 star service in this 5 Star resort /Hotel. Concierge booked sanya show tickets and arranged free Pick up car ...door to seat service and ecellent show
Quality roms and fittings, pools ,grounds etc excellent
The overall experience was wonderful! This is a newly built, total luxury hotel. There are many infinity pools, hot tubs, and an indoor heated pool. The beach is a short walk on well-maintained paths. The water is visible from all the room balconies. The hotel has beach lounge chairs and a bar on the beach as well. There are also private villas for rental.
The lobby makes an amazing first impression. The decoration is "Bali modern" with impressive teak wood and modern art touches. The music adds to the ambiance, a sort of dream-like music box melody is played. The walls are all open-air throughout the public areas of the hotel. Water falls from the second story balconies where a handful of tables sit on top of the balconies amidst water.
The rooms are clean and decorated beautifully. The balconies give a nice view of the pools below and the beach. One potential negative: The bathroom is separated from the main room by a see-through screen, not a solid wall. There is no real privacy from the bathroom to the room. The shower is clear glass. If you travel with a friend or share a room with other family members, the staff will throw a sheet over the screen for some privacy though it does take away from the feel of the room and only provides some visual privacy.
Not all of the public bathrooms within the hotel have hand soap.
There are a number of restaurant choices within the hotel. The breakfast is buffet and there are a lot of options though it does not all stay heated so an early start may be better for this. The Sunset Caribbean Barbecue is a must ! The food at the Barbecue is excellent and there is live entertainment (which can be heard throughout the hotel.) The staff will also bring drinks to you poolside.
Very little of the staff speak English though the manager did and the check-in staff spoke limited English. This generally was not a problem. There are Russian translators.
The beach is very nice though perhaps not as clear and blue as some tropical locations. It is great for collecting shells of small to medium size. There are boating opportunities, jet skis, and motorized bike rides offered by private parties on the beach. It is not distracting.
We flew into Haikou and hired a driver at the airport to drive to the hotel in Sanya. We negotiated with him to keep him as our driver for an excursion and a return trip to the airport. We paid separately for each drive as we had negotiated prior to hiring him. The final day the driver attempted to change the price. The hotel rates to the airport for cabs are quite costly compared to a hired driver. The hotel manager did intervene for us. It may be better to fly directly into Sanya if possible to avoid this scenario.
We were there during the time of Spring Festival so there were amazing fireworks shows on the beach that could be viewed there or from the room balcony. The noise echos off the hotel and can go on until past midnight but we found it entertaining.
We would definitely go again. The beauty and relaxation of the hotel and location left a far-more lasting impression than any minor inconveniences. It was magical! The entire experience was the best hotel experience we have ever had!
Would go again.
After looking at several places in Sanya on the net Howard Johnson was exactly what it stated. I went with my partner and a friend, we had a twin room which we swapped no problems when we got there as there was construction over the road.
The grounds are beautiful and the staff where fairly helpful. (we didnt speak to them much).
Very easy access to the beach and great beach bar.
We stayed in both nights we where there and ate the four seasons cafe.
For westerners I thought it was really good and quiet well priced for the quality of the food, (I wouldn't recommend the soup, very small portion).
The bar was great, (weren't cocktails as I know them BUT they kept trying till they got them right).
All in all I would stay there again :)
Great resort to stay if you are in Sanya
Howard Johnson Sanya is a great place to stay if you are in Sanya. The rooms are generally clean and comfortable. The swimming pools are huge. There is also a heated indoor pool for those night and early morning swims. The walk to the public Sanya beach is around 10 minutes. There is a underground passageway to link the hotel to the beach. The buffet breakfast serves both local Chinese food as well as Western items such as cereals, sausages, ham, bacon, eggs and salads. Although the choice are rather limited. Price for the breakfast is RMB138++. Dinner in the Chinese restaurant was not too bad. The food was tasty and reasonably priced. For 5 adults and 2 kids, we spent around RMB500 to RMB800 for dinner with around 5 to 7 dishes. Although the chambermaids did forget to replace towels etc when cleaning the rooms, you can easily call housekeeping to request for them. In the night when dining at the restaurants, the mosquitoes are really a nuisance, although not a fault of the hotel. You can request the waitress in the restaurant to lit a mosquito repellant coil to be placed under your table. Taxi to downtown Sanya Jiefang Street costs RMB30. The conceirge can arrange the taxi for you. The conceirge can also arrange for day tours to Nanshan and Tianya Haijiao. Costs RMB288 for a full day tour.
You will be pleased
The Hotel is HUGE. But well taken care of. Most value for your Moolah. It has 5 pools, several hot spring pools and private beach area!! Food is great. A band plays every evening and they are good. Food is better than the rest of Sanya- quality and price wise. Staff is super efficient. Every one of them from the bell boy to the receptionist. Service is prompt and pleasing. There was an English speaking staff by name "Summer". She was extremely helpful even when we landed well past midnight and queried like maniacs. I would recommend this hotel to everyone visiting Sanya. As the location is convenient from the airport, grocery stores and other highlights. Did I mention the sweeping view of the Sunset on the beach from your room??
Relaxing, great facilities and well situated
Had a great vacation here, the staff were friendly and attentive, facilities excellent, what you'd expect of 4-5 star resort and prices reasonable. Short taxi trip (30RMB) to town will have you sorted with respects to increased dining and entertainment options. Grounds, pools, gym, beach, kids club and rooms are excellent. No problems with the beds, pillows that I've come to expect with traveling to China, I would highly recommend this location for families, couples and conferences.
Great hotel and kind staff but beware of pearl ladies on the beach!
We really enjoyed our time at the Howard Johnson Resort. It was nice, clean and had some great views. However, we did have to make a few complaints during our stay and we're not sure they were taken very seriously. We made 2 complaints about the same elevator (in the East Wing by the Hot Spring Pool) because it suddenly stopped and shook at the 9th floor on two separate occasions on our way up to our room on the 12th floor. The second time it happened, the elevator went to the 9th floor then descended to the 5th...we didn't even get to the 12th floor! They told us an engineer would look at it but we're not sure if that happened...scary! So, we avoided that elevator. The breakfast buffet in the mornings was great as were most of our experiences eating at the resort, however, we did have a few negative incidents including being served ROTTEN parmesan cheese which was compensated by serving another paste which was very undercooked and not very tasty...chunks of butter were found all through the carbonara sauce. A second incident at the same restaurant (The Four Seasons Cafe) was having a beef tenderloin ordered medium come out too overcooked - beyond well done! It took an hour for this to be served to begin with and it wasn't that busy - the restaurant cannot cope with too many tables to stay clear if it's busy! The steak was reserved medium but then we were overcharged and it took the staff over 30 minutes to figure out how to fix this problem and the manager was no where to be seen. We also tried the Sunset Caribbean BBQ one night when they had the a la carte menu but were disappointed with the wait time to get some of our food - over an hour and it wasn't very busy - we're convinced they served our food to another table because they were complaining of their bill being too expensive...even though they did eat the food!
All in all though it was still a good experience. The beach could be more relaxing if there weren't women selling pearls or fruit approaching you every 5 minutes but you just have to give a stern "No!" Do not ask how much or touch the pearls IF you want them to JUST GO AWAY!
One huge plus is that the beds are SUPER comfortable! We had some super sleeps and it was hard to leave knowing we'd be coming back to a hard Chinese style bed! :)
Overall a good stay at HJ
We visited for 4days over the labour holiday and overall it was a good stay. When we arrived we were greeted by the welcoming reception team and check in was nice and easy considering we don’t speak mandarin. We were taken to our room by Mindy (明玉) who was extremely helpful and professional. She speaks perfect English and was very helpful by pointing out where the restaurants are and giving us all the information we needed for a comfortable stay. We had to ask Mindy to help us with booking a reservation for the BBQ during our stay and she was more than happy to help us. Mindy is a credit to the hotel and our stay wouldn’t have been the same without her. We found that the hotel service and amenities do not meet the standard of other international hotels in Sanya and could be more diverse and open in their approach.
A hotel that worths to be recommended.
This hotel does not promote its brand and no one, esp Hong Kong does not know its existence. I think it worths to have many more international visitors to accommodate. The hotel designe and material are all very nice and good looking. It also provides excellent place for conferencing and meeting. It would be a waste if they are not in used in often.
I am very impressed by its rain shower in each room. It's my first time to have such fatastic showering experience. It is so comfortable.
Large Resort by the Beach
We stayed at HOJO for 2 nights as part of a package, and for the most part it was a comfortable and clean experience. The hotel is right by the beach, which includes a dedicated tunnel path from the hotel grounds to the beach (so you can avoid leaving the property and venturing off onto the street and traffic)
There are a series of large pools and hot tubs that are in the centre of the hotel and is flanked by 2 towers (east and west buildings). The rooms were clean and large and we had a balcony view that faced the pool area.
Hotel staff was helpful, albeit their limited english skills but they did their best for us. What's actually surprising is the amount of Russian we saw everywhere (as well as chinese locals that spoke fluent russian)...where we quickly realized that Sanya is a popular spot for Russian tourists.
Taxi cabs to and from the hotel should only be 35RMB..so anything more, you will need to bargain the price down. (Coming out of the airpot, taxi drivers attempt to start at 70+RMB)
One criticism I had was that the hotel is a popular spot for conferences and functions, with the main pool area being rented out for these nightly galas that go on until about 11pm. Not the greatest situation (having to listen to the music and the pounding bass beats, when all you want to do is relax!)
Sanya is still being developed: there's still lots of construction when you leave the hotel. The sidewalks are not necessarily completed, traffic lights/crosswalks aren't implemented. Large construction sites surround the beach areas. Even the beaches still need a lot of improvement - garbage/recycling facilities, boardwalks etc. I think the area has the potential to be quite nice in the next few years, but there's still a lot of improvement needed.
(Note: there is another area called Yalong Bay that is approx an hour away from Sanya Bay that also boasts international hotels as well)
Perfect for what we were looking for!
We had a great time at the HOJO Sanya Bay.
When we first arrived, we were a bit early for check-in so we left our bag with the concierge and roamed around the resort. It is huge! It is beautiful! When we did get a chance to check in, we weren't very pleased with our room as our view was just of the construction going on behind the building and a tiny bit of the sea (our room was "Superiour Sea View")...We went to the front desk and they helped us out, moving us to the other side of building with a much nicer view of the pool area and the sea.
The pool area is enormous, we never had trouble getting a chair to sit on for the day (keeping in my mind, it wasn't during a holiday or anything). The beach was very nice - a bit of a trek from your room and across a road but there is an underground tunnel for the resort that gets you there. It was the same way for almost all resorts (having to cross or go under a road to get to the beach).
The drinks were a bit overpriced, so we ended up just going across the street from the front entrance of the hotel where they had a super market and a few local stores and stocking up on a some stuff on our own. The meals were reasonably priced and the dinners were good. We mostly ate at the four seasons cafe (western restaurant) and it was up to par.
In terms of location, depending where you want to go, it can be far away or close to things. We travelled to a few places including Tianjian Hairou and Yalong Bay and the taxis were fairly cheap. We wanted to make it out to Nanwan Monkey Island but it was just too far away from the resort to waste two hours getting there and two hours getting back, although I have heard it would have been worth it!
One thing I didn't like was that you had to pay to play table tennis (50 RMB) and billiards (60 RMB).
Overall, if we were going back to Sanya we would probably choose a different resort just to be in a different area, but I would suggest here 100% to anyone looking for a nice relaxing vacation.
Chinese-good with improvement opportunities
Nice family vacation on huge resort with large pool area, beach, large room and breakfast. Chinese 5-star, good value. The resort is deeply in need of a tourism information desk/booking agent to meet the needs of non-Chinese speaking families who want to see a little more of the island than the poolside. We struggled to find info and finally get a driver for a simple daytrip to Yanoda rainforest & monkey island (nice cable car ride).
Great Facilities and Location, Okay otherwise
A couple of friends and I stayed here for a week and it was a great experience. Although the hotel rooms we stayed in were not the best (and lacked a window that separated the bathroom and the room itself), the facilities like the pool and the location was great. I spent pretty much all of my day either in the pool (where they have 3 different ones) or at the beach (which was a 3-5 minute walk).
The food offered for breakfast and dinner was buffet style but not too good if you like western food or can cook yourself. It's just really simple things like for breakfast: fried egg, bacon, potatoes, yogurt, etc. However, I really enjoyed the selection of fresh fruits at the meals like dragon fruit, watermelon, melons, and even mangoes. Also, for breakfast there occasionally was coconut juice and that was different.
The service was pretty decent and the maids were especially nice.
This location is perfect for those who want to relax and go to the beach all day; there just isn't much else to do otherwise. I would go back mostly because of the nice pools and location; the rooms don't bother me too much because I was exhausted by the end of the anyway.
They have enough staffs to handle all the problem & accident immediately!
e.g. they will close the door & sweep the floor immediately when it's rain (in the public area & corridor), & they will clear up the table as soon as possible when we are having breakfast, so that we may have enough spaces for the new round of food!
reasonable priced hotel
Large hotel in Sanya bay. The rooms are of a reasonable size (approximately 50m2), clean and have sea view. The beds are pretty good (not to hard or to soft). Good hotel to relax at one of the pools, child friendly. A lot of Russians. Included breakfast has sufficient choice. Dinner-lunch is expensive and soso
Christmas in sunny Sanya
The room was a good size with a balcony and ocean and resort views. Service was generally good although at a price--no free newspapers here.
Breakfast in the Four Seasons restaurant was good with a mix of Chinese and Western foods available.
Staff were friendly and welcoming. The free bus shuttle service to the airport and into town using a new coaster-style bus was efficient and punctual. Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
Nice hotel in a pretty good location. Near Airport which is much better than yalong bay. Staff is nice. Breakfast is ok. Not really western but does the trick.
The view from the balcony is amazing..
It has its own beach area, which is very good..the breakfast is also nice, not a lot if western options though!
But the service is great..definately recommended!!!
Moonlight on Sanya Bay.
To my surprise, the Howard Johnson in Sanya,Hainan shouldn't be associated with any Howard Johnson in the US. The grounds and activities at this resort in the South China Sea, stands out among the top 5 resorts on The island of Hainan. There is a beach access and several restaurants
In this resort catering to Korean, International, Caribbean, and Western palates. The balmy weather is very close to the weather in Hawaii. In fact it is considered by many as the Hawaii of China. The service is pretty good depending on how crowded it is. The Caribbean restaurant (open air dining ) features a sea food buffet and a variety of other entrees, there is also a floor show that will keep you entertained. One flat price includes drinks as well. They cook to order steaks, fish, chicken. The Western restaurant as it is called is a little slower on service but there you really aren't in a hurry or shouldn't be. It is also known that each restaurant is a franchise within the hotel. Best to arrange breakfast (prepay) before you start your stay. We go there as a rule every year. Sometimes 2 times a year. Careful of the sun your on the Tropic of Cancer and you can get burnt if you don't protect yourself. Rooms were cleaned every day and the room service varies during the day. The pools are well maintained and there is also a natural thermal spring pool on the main floor. They also have two and 3 bedroom private duplexes on the grounds with full kitchen facilities.
Not a bad choice...
First and foremost, I must say that all Sanya hotels are grossly overpriced and you are definitely not going to get your money's worth one way or another. But if you really decide on Sanya, you should try to manage your 'damage control'. After weeks of research, we have finally come to the consensus with the Howard Johnson Resort Sanya Bay.
The hotel is nicely situated near the airport, and with the free hotel shuttle, it's about 10 minute ride to the hotel. The hotel lobby is very spacious and though not grand, it has a nice tropical touch. It reminded me of the Pam Pacific Golf Resort in KL which our company used to go for our training in Malaysia. The staff are friendly but seem not very knowledgable while guiding us through the check-in.
The room decor is alright and the beds are comfortable, no complaints there, although they could do a better job with the maintenance (the hotel was opened in 2008, so you would expect everything to be fairly new but parts of the bathroom were a bit worn out already). There's a small balcony overlooking the outdoor swimming pools. The pools fortunately for us, were not packed with people so we were able to enjoy it throughout our stay. There are 4 restaurants in the hotel, serving Chinese, Korean BBQ, international cuisine and BBQ buffet (RMB188 per head). A bit of variety there at least.
Transportation in Sanya can be nightmares in times. The taxi drivers would always tell you that their meters are not working and subsequently ask for a much higher fee (50%-100% more). Sorry but we are definitely not prepared to pay extra while they lied to their bosses. We went to this 5-star hotel for dinner and had trouble finding a taxi whose driver is willing to accept the 'meter rate'. We ended up waiting for almost an hour.
All and all, our stay was not bad. We'd try to stay away from going out at night and eat at the hotel restaurants. That will definitely save us some trouble with the taxi drivers.
This is a gorgeous hotel with a nice location. Very Clean!
Great place with great space!
Reached the resort at night and immediately drawn by the size of the lobby! Food in hotel is quite pricey but nice! Rooms are great! Service is prompt! Nice pools n on way to beach can see a nice grass lawn! Private section of beach w own beach chairs! Remember to bring hotel room card to exchange for beach towels and even safekeeping of valuables!
The hotel is huge. It has a very large lobby. It has three swimming pools. The pool at the East Wing is especially designed for children. The centre pool is the largest and beautifully decorated with tropical trees lining up both sides. It has an indoor pool for hot spring at the West Wing, unfortunately we weren't able to use it as it was still under maintenance. It also has a very large lawn. Each room has a balcony. There is no wall separating the bathroom and the bedroom, however, there is a curtain which can be lowered for additional privacy. The hotel has access to the beach by walking pass the lawn and through an underpass.
Breakfast was well served. There are a lot of varieties, from bacon and eggs with toast to soup noodle and congee, catering for both local and western tourists.
It's quite convenience to get to the hotel from the airport as it's only a short taxi ride of no more than 15 minutes and will cost about 20 RMB. There is a bus stop on the other side of the hotel, near the beach area where you can take Bus No 8 to get to the city centre for shopping and dining. The bus fare is 5 RMB per person.
The hotel is very good for family and couples on honeymoon who want to spend more time enjoying the hotel facilities. It's important to stay with the children at all time as the hotel is so large that one can easily get lost.
The only difficulty encountered during my stay is that the hotel staff even those working at the front counter couldn't speak English so there was a bit of a communiation problem.
Overall, I've enjoyed my stay at Howard Johnson Resort Sanya Bay and would recommend it to you.
Large clean spacious hotel in a good location at Sanya Bay
We arrived at the hotel by taxi and were awaited by the hotels concierges. They took our bags while we proceeded to check-in. Always take a meter taxi and not the guys that prompt you into their cars, they are ALWAYS more expensive. The hotel is huge featuring around 1000 rooms while we were there the hotel was only at 25% capacity I think.
The reception desk was staffed by atleast 10. They however had some troubles finding our reservations though it should not have been hard to find under our family names..
Anyway we checked in into our deluxe seaview room on the 9th floor. The rooms are large clean and spacious and are equipped with all the amenities you might need including an ethernet cable for the free internet. Free wifi is available in the lobby.
The airconditioning works well (if you manage to figure out the Chinese remote control ;))
We requested a king bed which sleeps very well, it had a hard matress which I've liked alot.
There is hardly any noise from outside eventhough we were located streetside.
The hotel has one large indoor pool which is heated and several outdoor pools. Note however should the hotel be full of non chinese guests (which I think will not be the case very often) there could be a shortage of sun loungers.
The staff at the pool and poolbar hardly speak any English so if you have any other question other than the normal ones you'll have a hard time getting an answer from them. It has to be said though all the staff are VERY helpful and will do their utmost to help you.
Everything is kept clean and immaculate including the many trees and other various plants on the domain.
Drinks are priced okay at the pool but it's much cheaper to buy them at a supermarket or at the small store outside the hotel.
The breakfast starts early enough and ends SHARP at 10.30, don't bother coming later because all the food will be gone. Anyway 10.30 is a nice time to close so just come earlier!
The breakfast has both Chinese and Western options and varies during the week.
We did one hotel restaurant Kwok Heung Kok I believe which is also reasonably priced and has some good options though when it's calm in the hotel they might not have everything you need.
Finding places to eat in walking distance of the hotel is difficult except if you like street bbq's and shady places.
Take a cheap taxi (not the njam njam ladies on their mopeds, you'll know when you get there) and ask them to go to Jiefang Lu which is a big shopping street with supermarkets and others. Always use the meter you'll come out more expensive if you arrange a price.
While you are driving there there is one other big street on the left hand side of this street after a while you'll see other seafood restaurants. Keep going a bit further and there you will see more Western/American style restaurant buildings the food however is 100% Chinese but the quality is superb and cheap! Don't bother asking the concierges where to go they don't have a clue. The one we ate at most of the time was a stylish restaurant with dark yellow neon lights, you'll notice it when you drive by.
If you like good seafood at a good price go to the Chunyuan Seafood Plaza just behind Jiefang Lu. You can select the fish you want and then take them to a small stand to prepare everything for also a cheap price! You will pay a fixed price per type of fish you bring in. We had around 7 kinds and did not pay more than 69 RMB to prepare everything.
Back to the hotel the check-out was flawless and we left satisfied.
If you like the hustle and bustle China can bring you definately stay in a hotel in Sanya bay, if you like to stay in your hotel the whole time take a hotel at Yalong Bay (be aware there is litterly NOTHING to see/do in Yalong bay except for the three restaurants that are extremely overpriced). Yalong bay features more upscale hotels too but you'll pay the price.
If you need a city map the concierge desk has them, just ask one.
If you have more questions or want to know the exact names of the restaurants we went too message me please.
Very good resort, nice stay
I went for the October holidays, I was very satisfied.
The Hotel is nice, with good covered spaces, nice rooms, a wonderful swimming pool area and one unbelievable grass lawn. We were welcomed by a Nepalese guy very kind and speaking a good English.
The rooms are comfortable and well maintained, with a small balcony and good view (better choose the inner ones, more quiet).
The beach is not nice as in other island's places, anyway the hotel has a pretty good reserved area with lounges and parasols.
During the holidays the hotel became crowded and crowded, but the answer was adequate. The biggest restaurant was used for the breakfast, and you can always find a place to seat. Some difficulties to find a sun lounge near the swimmingpool, luckily Chinese guests prefer to use the pool after the sunset.
In the hotel and on the beach there are good restaurants, with good value for money. Consider that in Sanya prices for food are much higher than in Mainland.
Luxury resort in China's tropics
This is a large resort hotel on the beach in Sanya. I am not really a fan of big properties but this place was well run and maintained, the service was prompt and helpful, and the room was a good size with a mini-bar, flat-sceen TV, free via cable Internet, and sliding glass doors onto a deck. The restaurants and food were really good. The fitness center is a real gym and there are plenty of on-site activities.
3 nights stay
Howard Johnson hotel has a very good view if you stay on the higher floors.
There are like 3 swimming pools but it is always full of people.
Not a place for you to relax with a good book and suntan around the pool though.
There is a bus stop near the beach where there are buses that can take you to most tourist attractions if you are not in a hurry.
As usual, Hainan Island is a very hot and humid place to visit in Summer - July to August. One must be prepared else you will get heat stroke.
Overall the beach is nice with strong waves both in Sanya bay and Yalong bay.
