Can't Keep the Park a Secret Any More
On my first visit to Croatia, it was intriguing to see an online reference with the Park Hotel listed as the #1 recommendation for lodging, with no reasons given. Lack of curiosity has never been my problem, so I booked a long weekend visit to check it out.
We easily found the Park on the main street through town, an eye-pleasing blue building with white balconies at most windows. At its' corner a left turn leadis into the ancient town of Stari Grad. (Sean Connery/James Bond/007 fans take note- a sighting will be revealed later.)
As we pulled up, the 1915-era building looked brand new, thanks to a yearlong complete reconstruction by new owner Antile "Tony" Rukavina. Tony is a Croatian who made his fortune in Austrailian construcdtion and then returned to give something back to his native land.
Give back indeed! In this relatively small community, every appointment and amenity in our room was Four Star worthy, with automatic door, light and air controls that responded to our presence. The supportive and seductively comfortable bed had extra pillows, and bath linens were soft, thick and plentiful. A cutting edge German tilt-or-open door invited us onto the balcony sitting area.
From our balcony, the glassy waters of the Istrian Riviera beckoned us out to explore the coast speard out there, and parking the car made first introductions- steps across the street is the Tourist Information office and free car park available to hotel guests, located at the picturesque park and wharf. A cliff-hugging but level and well-guardrailed scenic walk reveals beaches and coves, villas and their gardens dating from the Austrio-Hungarian empire. Divers may be seen heading out for bluewater adventures, while hikers and families on bicycles pass and any sport you may care to indulge is available close by. Step around the corner into 12th-century Stari Grad and look for a small doorway with the number 31, sitting on a short and slight incline- now remember Sean Connery walking out that door in "From Russia With Love".
Sheltered inlets of sailing and motor boats bob below seafood restaurants like the Kvarner and the Mali Raj, both of which deserve their own praises sung, from wine and local seafood offerings to dessert selections and Adriatic views throughout. Menus are multi-lingual as well as pictorial, in up to eight and ten languages depending on the establishment. Indeed, language was no problem wherever our feet led, as the Croatian economy is very much in tune with tourism. Genial and energetic Park Hotel Manager Branimir Blajic confided that all Croatian students begin their foreign-language studies in the fourth grade, and add a third language in the fifth grade. Everywhere we ventured, the evidence showed that they take their studies seriously and are happy to assist visitors.
And have your European travels left you in sticker shock? Here is a source of great relief, with full dinners for two or three, including wine and dessert, costing less than a single light lunch in Euro currency countries. Locally produced items make smart and cost-effective souveniers and gifts, while the Park's daily breakfast, included in your room rate, serves up a bountiful European and American selection of hot and cold dishes that please even the fussy younger traveler.
Alas, our weekend ended all too soon. But will I return? Just let me check the calendar....
